
Overview
Interventional cardiologist Dr. Humayun Mirza is board certified in Interventional Cardiology, Nuclear Cardiology, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Internal Medicine. A widely published author, he has published several articles in peer review journals such as Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and Blood. He is also the author of a book chapter on Congestive Heart Failure in Williams and Wilkins Publications “Modern Pharmacology with Clinical Implications”. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), American College of Physicians (FACP) and Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI). He has also held faculty positions at West Virginia University as an Assistant Professor in the section of Cardiology and is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor with the Baylor College of Medicine. He has been the Chief of Cardiology at several hospitals in Houston, including Memorial Hermann Greater Heights. Dr. Mirza is also highly decorated with the “Young Investigator Award” from the American College of Cardiology in 1996 for his work on Endothelial cell receptors and the recipient of the American College of Cardiology President’s “Affiliate of the Year “award in 1997. He also has awards from the American Society of Hematology and Wyeth- Ayerst. He has won several nominations for “Physician of the Year” at Memorial Greater Heights over the last 20 years. Dr. Mirza earned his medical degree from Dow University of Health Sciences in Karachi, Pakistan. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine, followed by fellowships in Cardiovascular Medicine and Advanced Vascular Diseases at University Hospital-State University of New York at Stony Brook and in Interventional Cardiology at West Virginia University. Among Dr. Mirza’s clinical interests are complex interventional cardiology with stents and angioplasty, coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndromes, pacemakers, peripheral vascular issues (pains and aches in limbs caused by blood flow problems) and interventions, blood pressure management, cholesterol management, heart failure, abnormal rhythms and heart attacks. Sincerity is the foundation of Dr. Mirza’s approach to patient care. He advises patients as if they were family members and bases treatment options on one of two criteria: that treatment will either increase longevity or significantly improve quality of life. The high points of Dr. Mirza’s practice are the times when he has made a difference in someone’s life and sees gratitude in that patient’s eyes or in those of their family members.

Dr. Biswajit Kar earned his medical degree from the University of Delhi in New Delhi, India. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he also finished a fellowship in cardiology and interventional cardiology. During his residency, he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. A professor of medicine in the Center for Advanced Cardiopulmonary Therapies and Transplantation at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), He Dr. Kar is chief of the medical division of the Center for Advanced Heart Failure at Larry D. Johnson Heart & Vascular Institute at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. Dr. Kar has practiced medicine in Houston since 1995 and is board certified in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. He specializes in cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, advanced heart failure and heart transplantation, and his clinical interests include advanced heart failure, cardiac transplantation, mechanical assist devices, high-risk coronary interventions, structural heart disease and cardiogenic shock. Named an America’s Top Doctor for the past fourteen years, Dr. Smalling has received a number of professional and service awards including the Distinguished Service Award from the AHA Texas Affiliate. He is on the editorial boards of Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions and The Journal of Interventional Cardiology. In addition, he holds several patents and has co-founded a company, Windmill Cardiovascular Systems, to produce a new implantable left ventricular assist device. Dr. Smalling specializes in the treatment of adult congenital heart disease, and valvular heart disease percutaneously as well as peripheral vascular disease interventions including carotid stenting and percutaneous endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm. Additionally, his team is experienced in utilizing left ventricular assist devices to support high risk coronary angioplasty and complicated valve treatment procedures. His research interests include advanced intravascular imaging procedures for coronary artery disease, mechanical and pharmacologic reduction of ischemic myocardial injury and developing advanced heart attack treatment systems. Dr. Smalling is the author of over 240 Scientific Papers, 145 abstracts, 25 book chapters, 2 books, and more than 15 web based CME articles. He and his wife Sharon have 3 children, Geoffrey, Elizabeth and Stephanie and 2 grandchildren. They enjoy cooking, cycling, skiing and traveling together.
