Murtuza K. Kothawala, MD, is a board-certified pediatric neurologist with the Orlando Health Children's Neuroscience Institute. Dr. Kothawala is dedicated to caring for children with epilepsy with the goal of eliminating seizures and side effects from treatment and helping his patients achieve the best possible daily function Since epileptic seizures result from abnormal electrical activity in the brain, Dr. Kothawala finds electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) an effective way to confirm the location of seizures in the brain in order to determine the best targeted treatment for each patient. What is EMG? Electromyography, known as EMG, is used to detect abnormalities in the brain by measuring its electrical activity. EMG helps identify areas of the brain that emit too many electric signals. Normal areas produce electrical signals that are a certain size, shape and sound, while damaged areas produce different signals. By analyzing these abnormal electrical signals, Dr. Kothawala is able to identify the specific site, nature and extent of damage. Understanding NCV Nerve conduction velocity, or NCV, measures how quickly electrical impulses travel. Certain neurological conditions cause electrical signals to be transmitted more slowly than normal. This test helps Dr. Kothawala determine the site, nature and extent of any damage. NCV is usually performed along with an EMG. Dr. Kothawala's Training Dr. Kothawala earned his medical and master's degree in pediatrics from the Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur, India. After graduation, he practiced pediatric medicine at one of the area's largest hospitals for 11 years and became interested in neurological disorders. Since arriving in the United States, he has completed a residency in pediatrics at Cooper Hospital in Camden, New Jersey, his fellowship in pediatric neurology at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, and also passed the Epilepsy Board examination. About Dr. Kothawala After finishing his fellowship, Dr. Kothawala was affiliated with major children's hospitals for 15 years while in private practice. He has extensive experience treating neurological disorders in premature babies and newborns in the neonatal ICU and children with acute and severe neurological disorders in pediatric intensive care. Dr. Kothawala is board certified in pediatrics, pediatric neurology and psychiatry with special qualifications in pediatric neurology and pediatric epilepsy. He is fluent in English, Hindi, Urdu, Gujrati and Marathi. He resides in Orlando with his family and enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing and bicycling, plus reading historical fiction.
