Overview
Dr. Rahat Hussain earned his medical degree at Dow Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan. He completed his residency in internal medicine at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) and fellowships in pulmonary critical care medicine and lung transplant medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He was also involved in research in neurocritical care, intracranial hemorrhage, cardiac arrest and hypothermia at Detroit Medical Center-Wayne State University and in infectious diseases at Baylor College of Medicine-Michael DeBakey VA Medical Center Hospital in Houston. An assistant professor of internal medicine/critical care at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, Dr. Hussain has been in practice since 2002. He is board certified in internal medicine and pulmonary disease. He provides pre- and post-lung transplant care and treats patients with severe respiratory failure, severe heart failure, sarcoidosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), post-transplant pulmonary complications and pulmonary fibrosis. His expertise includes ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), LVADs (left ventricular assist devices), post-operative management of advanced heart failure patients, phosgene exposure and heart and lung transplant ICU medical management. His research interests include ECMO and its outcomes, lung transplant and sarcoidosis. Dr. Hussain is the medical director of the sarcoidosis clinic at UTHealth and medical director of the heart and lung transplant intermediate unit at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.
