Before joining UCI Health and the UCI School of Medicine, he served as chief of colon and rectal surgery at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia, where he received multiple surgical and teaching awards.Shanmugan's research interests include the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of recurrent or advanced colon and rectal cancer, complex problems in inflammatory bowel disease, evaluating quality metrics and preventing complications in colorectal surgery, and outcomes research. He is the author or co-author of numerous peer-reviewed publications and is an active member of multiple surgical societies, including the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Dr. Joseph C.
