
Overview
Dr. Walid Ibn Essayed earned his medical degree in Tunisia at the Faculté de Médecine de Tunis. He completed a research fellowship in open skull base and endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City and a clinical fellowship in skull base surgery at the Hôpital de la Pitié-Salpêtrière in Paris, France. He also completed a clinical fellowship in image-guided neurosurgery and a clinical fellowship in skull base surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital-Harvard Medical School. He speaks French, Arabic, Italian and Japanese. Board certified in neurological surgery, Dr. Ibn Essayed treats cranial and spinal neurosurgical conditions, including both elective and emergent cases. His research interests include neuro-oncology, brain tumors, spine tumors, neuroanatomy, skull base and cerebrovascular surgery, multimodal imaging and the development of new technologies and innovations in neurosurgery. During his fellowship training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dr. Ibn Essyed was involved in improving the practice of neurosurgery and worked on several patented devices that created advancements in the specialty. He has also authored numerous book chapters, reviews and articles in peer-reviewed publications, including Nature Communications, Journal of Neurosurgery, Operative Neurosurgery, World Neurosurgery, PLOS One and Journal of Neuro-Oncology.

The recipient of numerous academic awards, Dr. Blackburn has lectured nationally on the management of cerebral aneurysms, surgical anatomy, arteriovenous malformations and stroke. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals including PNAS, Neurosurgery, World Neurosurgery, Journal of NeuroInterventional Surgery, British Journal of Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery, Stroke and Journal of Neuro-Oncology, among others. His clinical research interests include biomarkers for cerebral vasospasm and translational research for patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage, as well as a number of clinical trials for the treatment of brain aneurysms. His research studies focus on multi-modality assessments of cognitive functions combining intracranial recordings, functional MRI and direct cortical stimulation. He is funded by multiple grants from the NIH and the NSF to study and modulate brain networks involved in language, memory, prefrontal control and epilepsy. Most recently, he received a UO1 grant from the NIH BRAIN initiative, to probe the mechanisms of reading in the human brain. Dr. Tandon is a member of the Texas Medical Association, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Organization of Human Brain Mapping, Society for Neuroscience, and the American Epilepsy Society. He is a member of the editorial board of Operative Neurosurgery and an ad hoc reviewer for many peer-reviewed journals. He routinely serves as a reviewer on NIH study sections.
