Overview
Dr. Zachary Wismer says family medicine gives him the opportunity to do a little bit of everything. “It’s interesting, challenging and every day is different,” he says. Dr. Wismer is board-certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine. A cell biology and neuroscience graduate of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J., he earned his medical degree at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, Stratford, N.J. He completed his internship at Hackensack Meridian Palisades Medical Center and subsequently matriculated into the inaugural class of AtlantiCare’s family medicine residency program, where he served as chief resident his final year. During his training, nearly every specialty interested him. The light bulb went on; he chose family medicine, where broad knowledge across many specialties is a fundamental requirement. “We’re a team, patient and caregivers and it’s all about shared decision-making. The family practitioner plays the role of team leader, keeping everybody on the same page. You have to be flexible and willing to adjust for the right treatment plan. Communication is everything,” he says. Originally from Colorado, he finished high school in central New Jersey and resides with his family in Atlantic County.
