Dr. John Shank is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle injuries. He has treated high school, college, and professional athletes, including Olympic medalists and players from the MLB, NFL, and NHL. Dr. Shank has served as foot and ankle consultant for the Colorado Rockies and Denver Broncos, and currently consults for the Olympic Training Center and Colorado College. He treats sports injuries, trauma, and performs both simple and complex foot and ankle reconstructions. His expertise includes arthritis, cartilage injuries, fractures, and deformities. He specializes in total ankle replacements and revisions, performing the most in southern Colorado using advanced CT-guided technology. He is especially skilled in complex trauma and minimally invasive techniques.Dr. Shank graduated summa cum laude from Xavier University and earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Colorado and a foot and ankle fellowship at Harborview Medical Center under Sigvard Hansen, Bruce Sangeorzan, and Stephen Benirschke. He also completed a sports medicine fellowship at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic with Dr. Richard Hawkins. He completed his internship and residency training at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center. Dr. Leland completed fellowship training in Foot and Ankle Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and Orthopedic Trauma at University Carl Gustav Carus in Dresden, Germany. He subsequently returned to Detroit as Chief of Foot and Ankle Surgery in the Department of Orthopedics at Wayne State University and Chief of Orthopedics at the VA Medical Center where he was twice awarded the Teacher of the Year Award. Dr. Leland currently serves as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Colorado and received the Colonel Alan Bucknell Award for Teacher of the Year in 2020.
