Overview

I am a cardiologist trained and experienced in preventive cardiology. I have served as the medical director of the Duke Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (formerly DUPAC) since 1994. I specialize in the prevention and treatment of heart disease risk factors before and after cardiac disease develops. I direct a program that uses the principles of balancing energy intake and expenditure to treat heart disease and metabolic diseases, such as diabetes. I also have an active practice for assessment and advice for the older athlete who wants to improve performance – whether he or she has heart disease or not. My research is directed at defining the best exercise regimen for the most benefit.

I wanted to be a doctor from the time I was very young, but it was when my own father had a heart attack in his 30’s that I knew I wanted to be a heart specialist. As a general cardiologist here at Duke, I care for patients with a wide range of heart issues including palpitations, abnormalities, hypertension and heart attacks. I work between two clinics, serving people from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in the community. Although I focus on many therapeutic issues within cardiology, one of my main interests is cardiac arrest, specifically regarding survival of patients who have undergone CPR in a non hospital setting. I love getting to know my patients and finding things that connect us outside of their health or diagnosis. It is a privilege, as a physician, to be allowed entry into patients’ lives to listen, to comfort and to care for them during a difficult time in their health journey. Dr. Anderson is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Cardiac Arrest. Her top areas of expertise are Cardiac Arrest, Ventricular Fibrillation, Pulmonary Edema, Atrial Fibrillation, and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI).

I am excited about electrophysiology because it gives me the opportunity to improve patients' quality of life and allows patients to live longer in many cases. I ultimately went to medical school because of a passion for helping people, lifelong learning, and establishing meaningful relationships with my patients. I strongly believe in patient engagement and patient-centered decision making. Therefore, I believe that it is important to spend time educating patients and discussing all available treatment options. I encourage patients and their family members to ask questions so that I can help them understand their health. I offer medical therapy and catheter ablation therapy to patients with atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, and premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), and ventricular tachycardia. I also place transvenous pacemakers and defibrillators (ICDs), cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices, leadless pacemakers, and subcutaneous defibrillators. I also perform lead extractions. I have two children, and I enjoy cooking, as well as playing golf, tennis, and skiing. Dr. Pokorney is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Cardiac Arrest. His top areas of expertise are Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia (PSVT), Atrial Fibrillation, Arrhythmias, Cardiac Ablation, and Pacemaker Implantation.
