Dr. Matthew Martinez is director of Atlantic Health Sports Cardiology at Morristown Medical Center and a nationally recognized expert in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). He specializes in identifying and treating athletes who have underlying heart issues such as arrhythmia or HCM, a hereditary medical condition where the walls of the heart become excessively thick, obstructing blood flow from leaving the heart. Dr. Martinez treats patients at the Center for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, New Jersey’s first multidisciplinary program dedicated to diagnosing and treating HCM.Board-certified and fellowship-trained in cardiovascular disease at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, Dr. Martinez serves as a cardiologist for the Major League Soccer, Jets, and NBA players associations, and the NFL and NHL Combines. He also maintains a thriving practice evaluating structural heart disease in both symptomatic and asymptomatic athletes using cardiac imaging, including echocardiography, stress testing, cardiac CT and cardiac MRI.Throughout his internship, residency and fellowship training at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Dr. Martinez was recognized with multiple honors including chief cardiology fellow, and clinical associate professorships. He previously served as chair of the American College of Cardiology’s Sports and Exercise Section.
