
Overview
Dr. Hicks specializes in congenital aortic pathologies including aberrant subclavian arteries and aortic coarctation, thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms, complex lower extremity revascularization including lower extremity bypasses and stenting, and carotid endarterectomy. She is skilled in both open and endovascular surgery for the treatment of aortic and peripheral disease. She is also accomplished in clinical research with over 130 peer-reviewed publications and numerous textbook chapters; her research interests include clinical outcomes in aneurysm repair and lower extremity revascularization, as well as high-value care in vascular surgery. A distinguished fellow of the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Hicks is the recipient of the Department of Surgery Rothman Early Career Development Award for Surgical Research and was selected as a Visiting Scholar to the American Board of Medical Specialties for 2018-2019. She is also an appointed member of a CMS Clinical Expert Subcommittee tasked with refining peripheral vascular disease cost measures for implementation in the Quality Payment Program. Dr. Abularrage specializes in vascular and endovascular surgery, with a specific interest in minimally invasive techniques for lower extremity peripheral arterial disease and aneurysm repair. Thomas Reifsnyder, M.D., FACS, assistant professor of surgery at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, medical degree at the Indiana University School of Medicine. After completing a surgical internship, residency and vascular fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin, he completed an endovascular fellowship at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Before joining Johns Hopkins, Reifsnyder was a member of the teaching faculty at Western Pennsylvania Hospital as well as at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), St. Margaret Hospital. Credentialed in vascular technology, Dr. Reifsnyder serves as director of vascular surgery and the vascular laboratory at Johns Hopkins Bayview. He has co-authored numerous publications and contributed to several professional organizations and committees across the country with his multi-disciplinary expertise. Dr. Bruce Perler completed his internship and residency in general surgery, and a clinical and research fellowship in vascular surgery, at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Perler had edited several textbooks including Vascular Intervention: A Clinical Approach, Advances in Vascular Surgery, and Rutherfords Vascular Surgery. He is currently the Co-Editor of Rutherford's Textbook of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, 9th edition. He has authored nearly 200 peer-reviewed medical journal articles and textbook chapters on the diagnosis and treatment of the entire spectrum of circulatory diseases. He serves on the Editorial Boards of several vascular surgical journals, and has most recently served as the Senior Editor of The Journal of Vascular Surgery, the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders, and the Journal of Vascular Surgery Cases. He has delivered more than 200 lectures at national and international symposia and postgraduate courses. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Society for Vascular Surgery, and is past president of the Eastern Vascular Society the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, and the Chesapeake Vascular Society. He also is the immediate past president of the Society for Vascular Surgery, the largest vascular surgical organization in the world with more than 5,400 members. In December 2015, he was named Associate Executive Director for Vascular Surgery of the American Board of Surgery (ABS). In this position, Dr. Perler oversees all ABS activities associated with vascular surgery assessment and board certification. He will continue to work at Johns Hopkins, both practicing vascular and endovascular surgery and in his departmental administrative position, while fulfilling this role at the ABS. “Dr. Perler’s vast experience in vascular surgery education will be a tremendous asset as we seek to continuously improve our certification and MOC processes for vascular surgeons,” said Dr. Frank R. Lewis, executive director of the American Board of Surgery at the time of the announcement. “We look forward to the contributions Dr. Perler will bring to the ABS.”.
