
Overview
Kristen Koons, MD, is a rheumatologist. She treats adults for a variety of conditions, including inflammatory arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, connective tissue disease and vasculitis. She has a clinical interest in rheumatologic conditions that affect the skin. Dr. Koons performs diagnostic ultrasounds and ultrasound-guided joint injections and is co-director of the autoimmune nephritis clinic at Geisinger. In this clinic, patients see a rheumatologist and nephrologist at the same time for autoimmune conditions affecting the kidneys.|Dr. Koons attended The Penn State College of Medicine, where she earned her medical degree. After medical school she completed her residency at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where she served as chief resident. She followed that with a fellowship at Geisinger Medical Center.|“I love both the clinical and educational aspects of my job,” Dr. Koons says. “I get to treat the whole patient and remain knowledgeable about every organ system. I enjoy solving clinical puzzles by putting together clues from a patient’s history and physical exam. I also get purpose from my involvement in the rheumatology fellowship program. I love teaching and serving as a mentor to those just entering the field of rheumatology.”|Having a father who was a family medicine doctor inspired Dr. Koons to go into medicine, where she can now fuel others’ inspirations. “I am proud that I have become the rheumatology fellowship program director early in my career, and look forward to many years of teaching fellows,” she says.|Dr. Koons is a native of Selinsgrove. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, running, traveling and spending time with her spouse and their two children.

Clinical research consists of overseeing clinical studies of patients undergoing new treatments and therapies, and publishing articles in peer reviewed medical journals. Geisinger Medical Center - Rheumatology
Dr. Olenginski is a board-certified and fellowship-trained rheumatologist. Within general rheumatology, his clinical interests include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, vasculitis and gout/pseudogout. He has a special interest in osteoporosis, especially post-fracture care. His research interests include osteoporosis, post-fracture care and general rheumatology. Dr. Olenginski attended The Pennsylvania State University, where he received his medical degree. He completed his residency and a fellowship in rheumatology at Geisinger Medical Center. Dr. Olenginski is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and rheumatology. He is an ISCD-certified clinical densitometrist.|Outside of work, Dr. Olenginski enjoys golfing and traveling, especially to St. Thomas and to Tennessee for an annual golf vacation. This native of Glen Lyon, Pa., is a father of two grown sons and lives in Lewisburg with his wife and two cats, where he is an active PIAA basketball official. Dr. Denio is a board-certified and fellowship-trained rheumatologist. He is certified in rheumatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. After practicing and teaching medicine in Virginia for several years, Dr. Denio returned to Geisinger, in part, to fulfill his love of teaching by serving as director of the Geisinger Rheumatology Fellowship Program.|Dr. Denio said he was inspired to become a provider because of the “intellectual challenge of understanding our immune system and helping patients who have difficult challenging diseases.” He is a recipient of the Paulding Phelps Award from the American College of Rheumatology, given yearly to a clinical rheumatologist for outstanding service to patients, community and the practice of medicine. He also received the Medical Excellence Award from the Arthritis Foundation.|In his free time, Dr. Denio enjoys gardening and fishing. He recently became a grandparent and is a fan of Pittsburgh football and hockey, rooting for the Steelers and the Penguins. Dr. Denio is highly rated in 12 conditions, according to our data.
