Overview
Michael J. Schwartz, MD, is Chief of Urology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Director of Urology Services for Northwell Health's Central Region. Dr. Schwartz specializes in minimally invasive procedures to treat prostate cancer. He has vast experience in robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, evolving surgical techniques over time to minimize treatment-related side effects. For qualifying prostate cancer patients, Dr. Schwartz also offers focal ablation therapies, using sophisticated image guidance and focal tissue ablation to eradicate prostate cancer with few side effects. He has additional expertise in urologic oncology and surgery to treat kidney, bladder, adrenal and testicular cancers. Becoming a doctor always felt natural to me, Dr. Schwartz says. I was always interested in helping others, and urology is a wonderful blend of both medical and surgical care, allowing for the development of long-term relationships with my patients. Dr. Schwartz earned his medical degree from Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and pursued his residency training in urology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Cornell. He received his fellowship training in advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Dr. Schwartz values a team-based approach to care, working with radiologists, pathologists and medical oncologists to create individualized, evidence-based treatment plans. He also carefully listens to patients to meet their unique goals and preferences. In addition to treating prostate cancer, Dr. Schwartz is a pioneer in prostate cancer diagnosis. He was an early adopter of transperineal biopsy-which eliminates the infection risk associated with the prior transrectal method-and helped the Smith Institute of Urology transition to using that approach for all patients requiring prostate biopsy across Northwell Health. His research focuses on both diagnostics and treatment of prostate cancer, and he is involved with several clinical trials for focal therapy. He is a member of the American Urological Association and Society of Urologic Oncology. He is Associate Professor of Urology at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. For Dr. Schwartz, one of the best parts of his job is getting to know his patients. I have the privilege of seeing their humanity, learning about their lives and discovering what's important to them, he says. Their experiences inspire me every day.

James McKiernan, MD, is the John K. Lattimer Professor of Urology and CEO of ColumbiaDoctors. He is also Senior Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs for Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. McKiernan graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a BA in biology and received his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his training in urology and general surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, followed by a urologic surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. McKiernan's clinical practice is focused on urologic oncology and particularly on surgical therapy in high-risk patients with bladder and kidney cancers. Dr. McKiernan evaluates and treats over 1,000 patients with bladder cancer every year. His research, funded by NIH and biotechnology industry grants, focuses on developing novel therapeutics for bladder cancer treatment as well as comparative effectiveness research in urologic oncology. In the management of kidney and bladder cancer, he has special expertise in organ preservation and reconstructive surgery to maximize quality of life. Dr. McKiernan's research has been published in Cancer, Cancer Research, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Journal of Urology, Urologic Oncology, and Urology. He has authored and co-authored more than 220 scientific articles and book chapters on urologic cancer and related issues.For the past 10 years, he has directed a research team at Columbia University Medical Center investigating quality outcomes and effectiveness in urologic cancer surgery. He has served as the Vice Chairman for the AJCC TNM Staging Task Force, Co-Chair of the AUA Guidelines Panel on non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, as well as on the American Board of Urology and Society of Urologic Oncology Examination Committees. In addition, Dr. McKiernan is the principal investigator of the NIH-funded clinical trials program of experimental therapeutics in bladder cancer at Columbia University/NYPH, which is investigating new agents for bladder preservation in patients whose cancer has recurred after standard therapy. In collaboration with researchers at Columbia's Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, his team continues to develop new therapeutic strategies for managing bladder cancer.
