
Overview
Dr. Sukhdeep Singh Basra, an assistant professor at UTPhysicians, is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Interventional Cardiology and Echocardiography. He has also undergone additional training in Structural Heart Interventions (valvular heart disease) at The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano where he became skilled in minimally invasive treatments to replace/repair heart valves. His clinical interests not only include preventing heart disease with lifestyle modifications, but also treating coronary artery disease, structural heart diseases as well as peripheral arterial disease with minimally invasive techniques. He is skilled in advanced interventional cardiology and structural heart interventions including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), transcatheter mitral valve repair (MitraClip), left atrial appendage occlusion (Watchman) for atrial fibrillation, percutaneous closure of atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects and patent foramen ovale as well as mitral and aortic balloon valvuloplasty. Dr Basra has been the recipient of several awards and scholarships and has published in leading cardiology journals including Circulation, Journal of American College of Cardiology, International Journal of Cardiology, American Journal of Cardiology and presented in several international conferences. His research interests include TAVR, percutaneous ventricular assist devices, cardiogenic shock, new antiplatelet and antithrombotic medications as well as advanced heart failure therapies. In addition, he has also served as a member on several committees in American College of Cardiology and is also a reviewer for several prestigious cardiology journals. His role includes being an educator for UT cardiology fellowship program where he is involved in training of the cardiology fellows. He also continues to follow his research interests at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, specifically involving structural heart interventions and advanced heart failure therapies. Dr. Basra is Indian in origin, though he has been living in Houston for over a decade and loves the city. Outside work, he enjoys cooking with his wife at home. In his spare time, he also enjoys travelling, photography and listening to music.

He is on the editorial boards of Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions and The Journal of Interventional Cardiology. In addition, he holds several patents and has co-founded a company, Windmill Cardiovascular Systems, to produce a new implantable left ventricular assist device. Dr. Smalling specializes in the treatment of adult congenital heart disease, and valvular heart disease percutaneously as well as peripheral vascular disease interventions including carotid stenting and percutaneous endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm. Additionally, his team is experienced in utilizing left ventricular assist devices to support high risk coronary angioplasty and complicated valve treatment procedures. His research interests include advanced intravascular imaging procedures for coronary artery disease, mechanical and pharmacologic reduction of ischemic myocardial injury and developing advanced heart attack treatment systems. Dr. Smalling is the author of over 240 Scientific Papers, 145 abstracts, 25 book chapters, 2 books, and more than 15 web based CME articles. He and his wife Sharon have 3 children, Geoffrey, Elizabeth and Stephanie and 2 grandchildren. They enjoy cooking, cycling, skiing and traveling together.
