
Overview
Dr. Peter Chen earned his undergraduate degree in biology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and his medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Rochester (New York), during which he completed a 2-year research fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. After residency, he completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Texas Heart Institute-Baylor College of Medicine and a second fellowship in congenital cardiac surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In practice since 2008, Dr. Chen is board certified in thoracic surgery. His clinical interests include pediatric and adult congenital heart disease, complex neonatal heart disease, complex neonatal heart surgery, single ventricle palliation, pediatric heart failure, extracorporeal life support, and minimally invasive congenital heart surgery. Dr. Chen also serves as an assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where he is actively involved in mentoring students and residents and in the continued improvement of surgical education. His research interests include tissue-engineered heart valves, regenerative medicine, cerebral and myocardial protection, surgical outcomes after congenital heart surgery and the development of innovative surgical techniques.
