He was a staff fellow in the Pathology Branch of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health prior to completing a fellowship in cardiology with Georgetown University School of Medicine at Washington Veterans Affairs Hospital, where he went on to serve as director of echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. Dr. Fernicola also previously served in the U.S. Public Health Service and as an assistant professor of medicine in the Department of Cardiology at Georgetown University. Dr. Fernicola is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the American College of Physicians.
