His clinical and research interests include the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of recurrent or advanced colon and rectal cancer, complex problems in inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor disorders and anorectal disease.He serves as chief medical officer for UCI Health and leads the UCI School of Medicine's Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He also is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and participates on numerous national committees.Carmichael earned his medical degree at the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia.
