Preethi Kumar, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician. She is passionate about teaching families about ways to get and stay healthy. I get immense pleasure from treating children because these are the kids who see you for close to 20 years. You see them grow up. Over that time, you see children sick, you treat them to get well, you watch them grow, and you see them flourish. Sometimes those kids, once they’ve grown and started their own families, bring their children to us. I get a lot of satisfaction from that. I love teaching and explaining things to families. This is more than a job to me, it’s a passion. Making one child feel better, having one family comfortable and happy, I’ve done my job. At the end of the day, what I’m looking for is, “How many did I treat today? How many did I make happy? How many lives did I make feel better today?” When I see people walking out of here happy and healthy, that’s all I need. One big way I try to make a difference is through education and teaching. I give talks at schools.I try to make a difference to my patients by being available when they need me. I make a lot of follow-up phone calls. I talk with parents and ask about their other children. I talk with them if my families see me out shopping or in the community. I try to remember the little details, all as a part of knowing the family and building a relationship with them. Educating the parents gives them the best tools to make the right decisions for their child.
