Overview
I care for patients with neuromuscular disorders, which include muscular dystrophy, neuropathy, autoimmune muscle, and nerve conditions, as well as inherited ones. A lot of my work is focused on a holistic approach, so I don’t just focus on the treatment of the disease, but also the way the disease is affecting the rest of the patient’s life and quality of life. I will spend the majority of my visit talking with the patient, then do a full neurological exam, and then discuss potential options and potential diagnoses. If it is a condition that is autoimmune, we can discuss various therapies that can be used and other needs at home related to mobility or basic function. Our patients have a variety of different conditions that can cause problems with breathing, cardiac abnormalities, endocrine dysfunction, and mobility problems. Our clinic here at Duke is unique because we offer multiple consultants working as a team to give the best holistic care to a patient.

I am a neurologist and cancer doctor who treats brain tumors and researches ways to improve quality of life for brain tumor patients. As a college student, I thought I was going to be a scientist, but fell in love with studying the brain and its inner workings. The epilepsy patients that I see often have a hard time controlling their seizures or have other epilepsy-related problems. At Duke, we have many options, including clinical trials, advanced medications, and surgical options, that we can offer patients to get them to a better quality of life with fewer or no seizures. In sleep disorders, I see many patients with sleep apnea and have a passion for treating individuals with narcolepsy. My philosophy is that I want patients to be aware of all the different treatment options that they have available this them. Together, we come up with what I, the patient, and the family think is the best approach for the individual. This way, we can individualize the treatment for each person. It is very gratifying for me to see patients doing so much better with the appropriate medications and pursuing the dreams they have and doing the things they really want to do.
