Rebecca Sippel, MD, is a UW Health surgeon. She’s also a professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in the Department of Surgery.Dr. Sippel treats people with disorders involving their hormones and the endocrine glands that make those hormones. She performs surgery on the thyroid (small gland at the base of the neck), parathyroid (pea-sized glands behind the thyroid) and adrenal glands (on top of the kidneys).Dr. Sippel has a special interest in treating people who need a second parathyroid surgery to correct a procedure performed elsewhere. She also manages thyroid cancer and works to help her patients live high-quality lives.When meeting with patients, Dr. Sippel listens closely as they describe their symptoms. She considers their test results and makes a diagnosis. Then, she educates her patients about their endocrine conditions. David Schneider, MD, MS, FACS, is an endocrine surgeon at UW Health and an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Surgery.Dr. Schneider specializes in diagnosing and treating all endocrine issues, including autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s disease, Graves’ disease and myasthenia gravis, tumors (both benign and cancerous), hormone imbalances and endocrine cancer. He uses the latest minimally invasive techniques when treating his patients. These include endoscopic thyroidectomy, minimally invasive parathyroidectomy and focused diagnostic exploration, which is used to evaluate the return of thyroid cancer.Dr. Schneider conducts clinical research in hyperparathyroidism, thyroid cancer and Graves' disease to determine the best treatment approaches for each condition. Bermans Iskandar, MD, is a UW Health Kids pediatric neurosurgeon and chair of the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Iskandar provides care for children with neurological conditions affecting the brain, spine and nerves. He also provides ongoing care for children with congenital (present at birth) conditions as they grow into adulthood.Dr. Iskandar takes care of children with brain problems such as trauma, tumors and congenital conditions. He also treats spinal conditions such as trauma and spina bifida (neural tube in spine doesn’t close properly) and peripheral nerve problems occurring outside the brain and spinal cord such as brachial plexus (nerves in the shoulder) and other injuries. He has a special clinical interest in pediatric congenital neurological diseases — specifically, hydrocephalus (fluid buildup in the brain), Chiari malformations (brain and skull structure issues) and spina bifida.In addition to his clinical and faculty work, Dr. Iskandar runs two research labs. In his research lab, he studies new treatments to promote central nervous system healing after injury. In his bioengineering lab, he studies ways to improve shunt (device to drain excess fluid) function in children with hydrocephalus.By far, the most rewarding part of my job is engaging with patients and families during their clinic visits.
