Overview
Dr. Ivan Harnden is a specialty care physician board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine. He rejoined Inova in 2024 as the System Chief of Gastroenterology (GI) and has been practicing since 2011. Prior to rejoining Inova, Dr. Harnden worked as a gastroenterologist at Fauquier Health in Warrenton, VA. Graduating summa cum laude from the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles, Dr. Harnden then continued his medical training as an internal medicine resident and gastroenterology fellow at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. Dr. Harnden later earned his MBA in the executive MBA program at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. With a passion for patient-centered care and a commitment to excellence, Dr. Harnden began his career in private practice in Northern Virginia. He went on to play a pivotal role in establishing and expanding the GI program at a Virginia community hospital and health system. Now as the System Chief of Gastroenterology at Inova, Dr. Harnden focuses on a collaborative approach and strategic vision aimed at enhancing patient outcomes and delivering outstanding GI care to the community served by Inova. Dr. Harnden’s clinical areas of interest include endoscopic management of refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) including transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF procedure), endobariatrics (minimally invasive weight loss procedures including sleeve gastroplasty, intragastric balloon and endoscopic revision after weight loss surgery), endoscopic mucosal resection for removal of large polyps, Barrett’s esophagus (including ablation techniques), endoscopic management of complex surgical complications, bleeding disorders of the GI tract, and colon cancer prevention. Outside the medical realm, Dr. Harnden finds joy in his family life. He is married to an oncologist at Inova Schar Cancer Institute, and together they raise three children. Driven by a love of adventure, Dr. Harnden enjoys spending quality time with his family, exploring new destinations through travel and indulging in water sports. In 2013, he described the procedure called gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy (known as G-POEM) and was able to disseminate and teach it all over the world. Other procedures that he expanded include peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), peroral endoscopic myotomy with fundoplication (POEM-F), Zenker’s peroral endoscopic myotomy (Z-POEM) and full thickness resection. In 2022, he received the Master Endoscopist Award from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) for his numerous contributions to the field. His procedural expertise includes endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), interventional EUS, submucosal endoscopy, POEM/achalasia, endoscopic mucosal resection, endoscopic submucosal dissection, luminal stenting, large polyp resection and Barrett’s therapy, among others. Dr. Khashab is involved with multiple gastrointestinal societies and has served on many committees, including the ASGE Standards of Practice Committee, which is in charge of formulating guidelines for the practice of endoscopy. He has also served as an associate editor for the journal Endoscopy, a premier journal in the field. Khashab is a highly sought-after speaker at national and international conferences, and he has participated in multiple live endoscopy conferences. Outside of academic medicine, Dr. Khashab is an entrepreneur. His major interest is in new technology and medical devices, and his goal is to disrupt the field by introducing technology that makes endoscopic procedures safer, easier, efficient and more scalable.
