Dr. Zhen Jane Wang is a radiologist who specializes in abdominal imaging. In research, Wang's interests focus on identifying novel imaging techniques and developing them into practical, useful diagnostic tools. Her research program includes using hyperpolarized 13C metabolic MRI – an advanced imaging technique – to assess kidney tumors' aggressiveness and diffuse kidney disease. She is also interested in quantitative imaging – a technique for measuring features of a tumor by applying algorithms to images – for assessing patients with pancreatic cancer. Wang has received research grants from private and public organizations, including the Society of Abdominal Radiology, Radiological Society of North America, U.S. Department of Defense and National Institutes of Health. In 2019, she received the Distinguished Investigator Award from the Academy for Radiology and Biomedical Imaging Research. After earning a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at Brown University, Wang earned her medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at UCSF, serving as chief resident. She also completed a fellowship in abdominal imaging at UCSF. She joined the UCSF faculty in 2008. Wang serves as associate director for UCSF's program in biomedical imaging for clinician-scientists and as associate chair for strategic planning in the UCSF Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging.
