Dr. Mahesh B. Shenai is a board-certified and fellowship-trained neurosurgeon at Inova with more than 15 years of clinical and surgical experience. He serves as the Section Chief of Neurosurgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital and the Physician Practice Director for Inova Neurosurgery. He was named a 2024 “Top Doctor” by Northern Virginia magazine. Dr. Shenai has significant experience in the treatment of neurosurgical conditions including brain and spinal neurosurgery. His practice and interests include spinal conditions (stenosis, radiculopathy, myelopathy), brain tumors, brain/spine trauma, and minimally invasive and cutting-edge procedures. He also has specialized experience in deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy for movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor. He has a special interest in bringing new surgical technologies to Inova and providing the Northern Virginia community with cutting-edge care. He has been on the forefront of intraoperative imaging and computer-aided surgical and robotic navigation for complex spine instrumentation, allowing for maximum precision and safety during spinal surgery. In 2017, Dr. Shenai performed brain surgery in an MRI scanner, the first procedure of its kind in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. His guiding principle is that the newest technology, combined with sound clinical judgment, will produce superior outcomes. Before arriving at Inova in 2013, Dr. Shenai served as a Clinical Instructor in Neurosurgery at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He completed his residency and fellowship at UAB after graduating from the University of Michigan.
