Overview
I grew up in New Richmond, Wisconsin, so coming back to practice in this rural setting was important to me. I've always liked to tinker and fix things, and because my dad is also a surgeon, surgery was a natural fit for me. In general medicine, we manage diseases rather than fix them, but I'm glad I can make a positive impact in patients' lives by intervening on a disease process, repairing and fixing a problem. My relationships with patients are short-term but intimate. Surgery is invasive, and I help them understand what their disease process is and what will happen before, during and after surgery. What's routine for me is new for patients, so part of my job is to educate them. I strive to make my patients feel comfortable. I'm friendly and always enjoy a good laugh to help get me through the day. When I meet with patients, we discuss the problem, the solution, treatment options and how to proceed. Everyone is an individual, so I tailor all communications and treatments to the individual. I find a way to explain everything so it's easy to understand, working with patients in the same way I would want to be treated. And I always take time to answer all their questions. I'm married and have four kids. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family, woodworking and generally working with my hands. I also help my dad with his farm. I am a member of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS) and the American Professional Wound Care Association (APWCA).
