"Charles Carmine Conte, MD, is a surgical oncologist with over three decades of experience. He specializes in every type of cancer, including breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancers and melanoma. Joining Northwell in 2004, Dr. Conte sees patients at Northwell Health Physician Partners Surgical Oncology at Lake Success, part of Monter Cancer Center.""Cancer doesn't follow any rules-every case is unique and complex,"" says Dr. Conte. However, my main area of expertise is pancreatic cancer.I chose to specialize in pancreatic cancer for a variety of reasons. It is a complex and aggressive disease that requires surgical and medical management based on innovative research. In addition, providing surgical treatment for pancreatic cancer demands great technical skills, and effective treatment requires a team of experts with access to the most sophisticated technology available.At Perlmutter Cancer Center, we perform more than 100 Whipple procedures—a complex surgery for cancer in the head of the pancreas—each year with outstanding outcomes. The mortality rate of Whipple procedures at our center is among the lowest in the world. I have performed more than 1,200 of these procedures.Our team has expertise in robotic surgery of the pancreas and liver, as well as in the removal of pancreatic tumors that involve major vessels, which is also known as locally advanced pancreatic cancer. We use transplants to manage certain types of liver tumors and offer precision treatment for all stages of pancreatic cancer. Our patients have access to the most advanced clinical trials.I feel privileged to share in the lives of people who have received a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and shepherd them through treatment. "Matthew J. Weiss, MD, FACS, is deputy physician-in-chief and director of the surgical oncology program at Northwell Cancer Institute. Dr. Weiss's team also works with scientists from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research to develop and run groundbreaking clinical trials. An international leader in both liver and pancreas surgery, Dr. Weiss has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications in the field, and he's currently a professor of surgery and oncology at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. ""Understanding both the science of the disease and the technological aspect of surgery is so important,"" he says. Dr. Weiss focuses on using cancer genetics to help find the right surgical approach for patients. When possible, he operates robotically using small incisions for faster healing, so patients don't have to wait as long to receive additional therapies that can improve outcomes. With recent advancements in the field, Dr. Weiss has been able to successfully perform high-risk surgeries that were turned down by other institutions.
