Queen of Hearts – Honoring 10 Elite Women in Cardiology

Cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of women in the U.S.

Each February, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) celebrates American Heart Month, with the goal of motivating Americans to adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent heart disease. The first Friday each February is National Wear Red Day supporting women’s heart health, when prominent spokespeople and millions of everyday supporters and communities join the American Heart Association when they #GoRedForWomen to support a common goal: the eradication of heart disease and stroke.

These initiatives are especially important in the lives of women. Cardiovascular disease is the number 1 killer of women, causing an estimated 1 in 3 deaths each year, more than all cancers combined. That’s approximately one woman every minute. Data shows that women actually experience heart attacks differently (and end up faring worse) than men.

And racial disparities amplify these differences, with black women disproportionately affected by cardiovascular disease. Compared to white women, mortality rates are 69% higher for coronary artery disease, 352% higher for hypertension, 54% higher for stroke in black women.

Yet female cardiologists are outnumbered by men 7:1.

Focusing on cardiovascular disease, and how it’s different in women, has also never been more important. Mounting evidence suggests that people with poor cardiovascular health are at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19, and that people who have had COVID-19 (even those with only mild symptoms) have shown lasting damage to the heart muscle, potentially increasing the risk of heart failure or other heart complications in the future.

Given these disparities, we’re taking this opportunity to support American Heart Month and National Wear Red Day by bringing attention to group of elite women in Cardiology.

Introducing the Queens of Hearts

We #GoRedForWomen by celebrating 10 elite female cardiologists. These “Queens of Hearts” are leaders in their field, and we’re proud to bring attention to their important work.

We’ve profiled 10 women at the national level in the United States, and 5 in each of the 10 most populous areas in the nation. To do so, we used our cutting-edge database to identify women who are leading experts in heart disease. These doctors are at the top of their field. Not only do they see (and receive referrals for) a high volume of patients with cardiac conditions, but they also tend to publish many articles in medical journals, speak at medical conferences, and participate in multiple clinical trials. They are likely to be on the cutting edge of new treatments. These doctors are also likely to hold leadership positions in their respective organizations.

While there are many excellent doctors who treat heart disease, these doctors specialize in a broad array of cardiology conditions, and many truly distinguish themselves when it comes to a variety of rare and congenital diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels.

We’re glad to support the efforts of NHLBI and the American Heart Association by helping to bring some well-deserved attention to these important heart heroes.
