Overview
As a gastroenterologist, Kathleen Martin’s interests run the gamut from esophageal disorders and celiac disease to gastric and duodenal ulcers, and Crohn’s disease, among others. She has been practicing medicine since 1990, currently treating patients 16 and older at Saint Joseph Medical Group – Gastroenterology.Dr. Martin is on the board of Saint Joseph Medical Group, chairs the Provider Recruitment and Engagement Committee and is chief of gastroenterology for the health system.In her approach to care, she facilitates discussions with patients to help with diagnosis, treatment and medical decisions, also trying to include discussion about diet and lifestyle. “I enjoy explaining the confusing aspects of medicine to help patients make informed decisions and learn how to best manage problems,” she said. Easing any patient fears is one way she expresses humankindness. “Making an anxious person smile or laugh is a daily goal,” she said.Dr. Martin pointed to the nuns at her Catholic grade school, who encouraged her interest in science, as her inspiration for becoming a doctor.Dr. Martin received her medical degree from Hershey Medical School at Pennsylvania State University. Her internal medicine residency was at University of Louisville, where she subsequently completed basic research and a gastroenterology fellowship.
