Overview

Dr. Sukesh Burjonroppa has cared for North Texas hearts since 2010. Prior to that time, he spent years in Galveston, Texas, serving as an assistant professor of medicine, director of Peripheral Vascular Interventions and assistant director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab for The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He is fellowship-trained in cardiology and interventional cardiology. Dr. Burjonroppa specializes in interventions for structural heart and valvular disease, including heart failure, coronary artery disease, HCM, congenital heart disease, valvular heart disease and peripheral vascular disease. He performed the first transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for critical aortic stenosis in 2015 at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth and has been involved in over 600 TAVR procedures, including complex valve-in-valve and alternative access TAVR in collaboration with surgical colleagues. Dr. Burjonroppa performs mitral valve repair with MitraClip as well as percutaneous transcatheter mitral valve replacement in appropriately vetted patients. Additionally, he performs transradial catheterization and has conducted over 60 courses to train physicians on the procedure and other advanced techniques to treat cardiovascular and peripheral vascular disease. Dr. Burjonroppa currently serves as an assistant professor in the TCU School of Medicine in Fort Worth and as physician co-lead of the Heart and Valve program at Texas Health Fort Worth. He also is the principal investigator for the randomized double-blind trial EXPAND TAVR for treating patients with symptomatic moderate aortic stenosis early in their clinical course versus medical management. He is the recipient of the Young Investigator award from the American College of Cardiology for his work on Rescue PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) going back to 2011.Dr. Burjonroppa earned his medical degree in Bangalore, India. In 2000, he set down roots in the United States to pursue his internal medicine residency at Mercy Catholic Medical Center, affiliated with the MCP-Hahnemann University School of Medicine, in Philadelphia, Pa. He completed his cardiology fellowship at the UT Health Science Center in Houston before going on to complete his interventional cardiology fellowship at the University of California San Francisco. Dr. Burjonroppa is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions. He holds additional certifications in cardiology, interventional cardiology, nuclear cardiology, vascular medicine and endovascular medicine. Beyond his work, he enjoys staying fit by playing tennis and traveling with family.

Dr. Szerlip received her medical degree and completed her residency at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was a Major in the US Army where she was Vice Chief of the Internal Medicine Clinic at Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia. She completed her fellowship in cardiology at Medical College of Georgia and her interventional cardiology fellowship at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. Dr. Szerlip joined the Baylor Scott and White Heart Hospital in Plano in 2013. She is the Medical Director of the Percutaneous Valve Program, which oversees both the large TAVR program as well as the percutaneous mitral and tricuspid programs. She helped start and grow the Structural Heart Fellowship Program in 2015 and in 2019 she helped develop and became the Program Director for the newly formed Cardiology Fellowship. She will also oversee the Interventional, EP and Heart failure sub-specialties. Prior to arriving at the Heart Hospital, she was faculty at the University of Arizona. Dr. Szerlip helped develop the structural heart program which was highlighted by the first percutaneous aortic valve program in Tucson. She was also Director of the Coronary Hybrid Revascularization program where she worked closely with the cardiothoracic surgeons in the combination of stenting the coronaries and robotic bypass. At the University of Arizona she developed her expertise in structural heart disease, which has led her to lecture nationally and internationally at major meetings and to become a rising figurehead in major studies pertaining to percutaneous valve treatments. In 2015, Dr. Szerlip was chosen by The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) to participate in the Emerging Leader Mentorship (ELM) Program. As a member of this highly select group of physicians, Dr. Szerlip participated in a two-year mentorship program designed to further develop her skills as a leader in medicine, ambassador for her specialty, and advocate for her patients.  She is currently the Chairmen of SCAI publication committee and is a member of the SCAI Board of trustees.
