Dr. Wei Z. Ai

Dr. Lawrence D. Kaplan, a hematologist-oncologist, directs UCSF's lymphoma program. He is an international leader in the treatment of lymphoma and HIV-associated lymphoma. In his research, Kaplan is particularly interested in developing new treatments for lymphoma and the HIV-related form of this cancer. Kaplan earned his medical degree at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He completed a residency in medicine at Boston Medical Center and completed a fellowship in hematology and oncology at UCSF. He joined UCSF in 1985. Kaplan's professional activities include serving on the Lymphoma Working Group of the AIDS Malignancy Consortium, a clinical trials group supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). He formerly chaired the group's steering committee. He also serves on the lymphoma committee of Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, a national research group sponsored by the NCI. Dr. James Rubenstein is a hematologist-oncologist, or a specialist in blood disorders. He has particular expertise in treating patients with neurologic complications from cancer, including patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma involving the brain (called central nervous system lymphoma). He also specializes in patients with cancer that has spread to the brain from other parts of the body. In his research, Rubenstein investigates immunologic tools to improve tumor response to chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and to minimize toxicity from treatment. He is also interested in developing tumor biomarkers to diagnose brain tumors. Rubenstein earned his medical degree at Weill Cornell Medicine and completed a residency in internal medicine at Stanford Medicine. He earned a doctorate in molecular and cellular neurosciences at the Rockefeller University. He completed a fellowship in hematology and oncology at UCSF, which included training in neuro-oncology. Rubenstein has won research awards from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the National Cancer Institute. He is a member of the American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Association for Cancer Research. Dr. Jeffrey L. Wolf is a hematologist with expertise in cancers of the bone marrow and blood, as well as in bone marrow transplantation to treat these cancers. His primary focus in both patient care and research is myeloma, the second most common blood cancer. He directs UCSF's Multiple Myeloma Program and the Stephen and Nancy Grand Multiple Myeloma Translational Initiative – a program to support the development of better treatments – at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Wolf's current research interests are in measuring minimal residual disease in patients who have undergone successful treatment for myeloma, as the results are useful in predicting long-term survival. Wolf earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago and completed a residency in medicine at the University of California, San Diego. He completed a fellowship in hematology and oncology at UCSF, followed by a bone marrow transplantation rotation at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. In 1979, Wolf helped establish the bone marrow transplant program at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, California. In 1984, he helped establish the first bone marrow transplant unit based at a community hospital in the United States, at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Berkeley. He joined UCSF in 2007.
