Dr. Lee F. Starker
Overview
Lee Starker, MD, PhD, is a medical director of surgical oncology for the eastern region with a special interest in thyroid and parathyroid tumors and cancers, endocrine disorders, melanoma, hormones and metabolism, and cancer genetics. He is highly trained in pancreatic and complex hepatobiliary surgery. He also specializes in NanoKnife® to treat unresectable pancreatic and liver cancers as well as hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), which is a highly concentrated, heated chemotherapy treatment delivered directly to the abdomen during surgery for peritoneal malignancies.After completing his surgical residency at Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut and surgical oncology fellowship training at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas, Dr. Starker returned to his New Jersey roots. Prior to that, he earned a PhD in epigenetics and genetics of parathyroid tumors from Uppsala University in Sweden, where he was chief resident and fellow. While studying there, he received the Gold Humanism Award, which recognizes excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service. He has also been named an NJ Top Doctor annually by NJ Monthly Magazine.Dr. Starker is widely published in various medical journals, including the World Journal of Oncology and International Journal of Endocrinology. He is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Starker and his partners provide patients with the latest surgical innovations and clinical research options. In addition, providing surgical treatment for pancreatic cancer demands great technical skills, and effective treatment requires a team of experts with access to the most sophisticated technology available.At Perlmutter Cancer Center, we perform more than 100 Whipple procedures—a complex surgery for cancer in the head of the pancreas—each year with outstanding outcomes. The mortality rate of Whipple procedures at our center is among the lowest in the world. I have performed more than 1,200 of these procedures.Our team has expertise in robotic surgery of the pancreas and liver, as well as in the removal of pancreatic tumors that involve major vessels, which is also known as locally advanced pancreatic cancer. We use transplants to manage certain types of liver tumors and offer precision treatment for all stages of pancreatic cancer.
