
Overview
Dr. Magge is a Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery and serves as the Surgical Director of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program. His clinical practice encompasses all types of pediatric neurosurgery, with particular clinical and research interests in pediatric brain tumors, craniosynostosis (endoscopic and open surgery), and pediatric neurovascular disease (including AVM’s and moyamoya disease). His brain tumor research has focused on finding better treatments for diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPG’s) and methods for liquid biopsy. He has been involved in multicenter clinical trials. In the field of craniosynostosis, he has been the principal investigator of a multicenter trial examining long term outcomes of children with craniosynostosis treated with either endoscopic or open surgery. He also started the first endoscopic craniosynostosis surgery program in the Washington, DC area and helped to grow a busy craniosynostosis practice in California. He has authored numerous scholarly papers, and he is a regular speaker at national and international conferences. Dr. Magge works to find the best treatment for each patient in the least invasive method possible.Prior to joining University of Michigan Health, Dr. Magge served as the Director of Neurosurgery and Co-Director of the Children’s Hospital of Orange County Neuroscience Institute and Professor of Clinical Neurosurgery at University of California Irvine. Prior to that, he was a faculty member in the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC, where he started the pediatric neurosurgery fellowship program and served as fellowship director.Dr. Magge grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and he attended Harvard College for his undergraduate studies, where he majored in biochemistry. He then obtained his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, graduating in 2001. During medical school, he completed a 1 year Howard Hughes research fellowship at the NIH. He then completed neurosurgery residency training at the University of Pennsylvania in 2008, and fellowship training in pediatric neurosurgery at Boston Children’s Hospital in 2009.
